About co-ops
Co-operatives and employee owned businesses are co-owned companies that are set up to meet common economic, social, or cultural needs. The companies are owned and controlled by their members, who can be employees, businesses or consumers.
Co-owned enterprises come in different forms and have different levels of democratic control. However they are typically run for the mutual benefit of their members and have a strong sense of ethics and social responsibility.
Profits can be distributed amongst members or invested in community development.
Independent research suggests a combination of shared ownership and employee participation delivers superior business performance and sustainability, with the long-term survival rate of co-operative enterprises almost twice that of investor-owned firms.
