Housing

Housing co-operatives are groups of people who collectively manage the accommodation in which they live.

Most housing co-operatives are fully mutual, in that all their tenants are members of the co-operative and have the right to be involved in the co-operative and in any decisions being taken.

In the UK, most housing co-operatives are 'par value' rental co-operatives, meaning that the tenants have no equity share in their house or flat. However they do own a share of the legal entity that owns the property, the co-operative.

There are around 30 housing co-operatives in Scotland. Aberdeen-based Tenants First is Britain's largest housing co-operative, with over 1,100 homes across North-East Scotland.

Others include West Whitlawburn Housing Co-operative in Cambuslang, Glasgow, with 550 homes.
