Other success stories
Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative
Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op started as a small bicycle repair shop employing three people in West Crosscausway, Edinburgh, in 1977. We have since grown into one of the UK's most respected bicycle retailers, running substantial shops in Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Newcastle and Leeds. The shops are by far the biggest in each of the four cities they serve and the co-operative now has a payroll of 70+ full-time-equivalent staff.
These four shops are augmented by the online shop www.edinburghbicycle.com, launched in 1996 (online two years before Google).
Factors behind the co-op's success include a world-class product range (such as our exclusive Revolution brand) which allows us to cater for nearly every cyclist or cyclist-to-be; massive collective experience; and a willingness to share enthusiasm for all things bicycling.
Most important of all is the workers' co-op ethos. Every full time worker becomes an equal member of the co-operative after a probationary period of one year. He or she becomes an equal owner of the business entitled, for instance, to an equal share of the annual profits. It's clearly in every worker's interest to care. We hope that this close involvement in the company manifests itself in consistent, exceptional customer service.
