Healthy eating in Portobello… Scotmid's Audrey Middleton combines this with recruiting some younger members into the society.

Scotmid

Scotmid can be traced back to 1859 when St Cuthbert's Co-op opened in Edinburgh. Over the years, other local societies merged and, in 1981, Scotmid Co-op was established.

251 retail outlets make us one of Scotland's largest employers with 4,200 staff. The main departments are food trading under Scotmid and Morning Noon and Night convenience stores; SemiChem; M&S Toiletries; Funeral Services and Property.

We strongly adhere to our values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity and solidarity. Our co-operative principles are guidelines that help us put our values into practice.

We always support the local communities where we trade. For example, every year we support one major charity, currently Children's Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS).

Our community activities and initiatives are diverse and demonstrate our social responsibility, such as Breakfast Clubs in local schools and Fruit Wave - providing free fruit to primary school children. Our Blender Scheme shows young mums how to wean their babies.

We actively support the fairtrade movement, providing talks to community groups and giving out samples to schools. We help raise awareness in every way possible and make an impact with our in-store demonstrations during Fairtrade Fortnight.

We provide our teaching research, Health for Wealth, to be used across Scotland as part of our commitment to the Co-operative Education Trust Scotland (CETS). We have also financially supported the printing of other teaching resources.
